Amazon has launched Nova Premier, the newest and most advanced model in its Nova AI family, aiming to strengthen its position in the competitive world of generative AI. Available now through Amazon Bedrock — the company’s AI development platform — Nova Premier is designed to handle complex multimodal tasks, processing text, images, and videos with a context window of up to 1 million tokens.

A Multimodal Powerhouse With a Caveat

According to Amazon, Nova Premier excels in tasks that require deep contextual understanding, multi-step planning, and integration across various tools and data sources. The model stands out in internal benchmarks for knowledge retrieval and visual comprehension, notably scoring high on the SimpleQA and MMMU tests. However, it lags behind leading competitors like Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro in coding (SWE-Bench Verified), as well as in math and science reasoning benchmarks like GPQA Diamond and AIME 2025.

Notably, Premier is not categorized as a “reasoning” model. Unlike more deliberative systems such as OpenAI’s o4-mini or DeepSeek’s R1, Nova Premier does not engage in extended computational thinking or fact-checking — a limitation that may affect its reliability in certain applications.

Competitive Pricing and Strategic Positioning

In terms of pricing, Nova Premier is on par with leading models. It costs $2.50 per million input tokens and $12.50 per million output tokens, nearly matching Gemini 2.5 Pro’s pricing structure. Amazon is positioning Nova Premier not just as a production model, but also as a “teacher” — ideal for distilling its capabilities into lighter, faster models optimized for specific tasks.

This release follows Amazon’s broader AI strategy unveiled at AWS re:Invent in December, which introduced the Nova family and its growing suite of models covering generation, understanding, and task automation across modalities.

AI at the Core of Amazon’s Growth

CEO Andy Jassy has signaled AI as central to Amazon’s future. The company is developing over 1,000 generative AI applications and reports triple-digit year-over-year growth in AI revenue — now accounting for a multibillion-dollar annual run rate. Nova Premier’s release reinforces Amazon’s commitment to expanding its Bedrock platform and capturing a larger share of the AI development ecosystem.

As the race to dominate the AI model market accelerates, Nova Premier represents Amazon’s latest effort to offer enterprise-grade multimodal intelligence — even if it's not quite ready to lead in reasoning-heavy tasks.
