Anysphere, the company behind the popular AI coding assistant Cursor, has unveiled a new $200-per-month subscription tier called Ultra, offering a major upgrade for power users. Announced in a blog post Monday, the Ultra plan provides 20 times more usage of leading AI models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and xAI compared to its existing $20/month Pro plan. Subscribers will also receive priority access to new features as they roll out.

A Strategic Push for Power Users

CEO Michael Truell credits the launch of the Ultra plan to multi-year partnerships with top AI providers, enabling Anysphere to offer deeper model access at scale. This move mirrors similar strategies from the model providers themselves — OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind have all launched higher-tier plans in the $100–$250/month range to target heavy users.

The new Ultra plan aims to further monetize Cursor’s rapidly growing user base. Earlier this month, Anysphere revealed that Cursor has reached $500 million in annualized recurring revenue (ARR), with adoption from tech giants like Nvidia, Uber, and Adobe. Cursor also hit $100 million ARR faster than nearly any other company, and has added $200 million in ARR since April alone, according to TechCrunch.

Competition from AI Giants

Despite its momentum, Cursor faces growing competition from the very companies that power it. Model providers like OpenAI and Anthropic are building their own AI coding tools — OpenAI recently acquired Cursor rival Windsurf, while Anthropic continues expanding its Claude Code offering.

Tensions in the space are already showing. Anthropic reportedly limited Windsurf’s access to its Claude models in an effort to gain leverage over OpenAI — an indication of the increasingly cutthroat environment surrounding AI coding tools.

Building for Independence

To hedge against dependency, Anysphere is investing in its own AI capabilities. In May, the company released Tab, an in-house AI model designed to help developers make smarter code changes across multiple files — a step toward diversifying beyond external models.

While Anthropic co-founder Jared Kaplan recently said he expects a long-term partnership with Cursor, the competitive landscape remains dynamic. As AI coding continues to explode in adoption and value, the battle for developers’ attention — and enterprise budgets — is just beginning.
