At WWDC 2025, Apple announced a major leap forward for developers by integrating AI directly into Xcode 26, its flagship app development environment. The biggest highlight: built-in support for OpenAI’s ChatGPT, now available natively in Xcode to assist with coding, documentation, debugging, and more.

AI-Enhanced Development

Apple’s move marks a significant shift toward AI-assisted programming on its platforms. With ChatGPT baked into Xcode, developers can generate code snippets, write tests, draft documentation, iterate on UI designs, and even detect and fix bugs—all from within the development suite.

Importantly, developers can access ChatGPT without creating an OpenAI account. However, users with paid ChatGPT subscriptions can link their accounts to unlock higher usage limits.

Bring Your Own AI

In addition to OpenAI integration, Apple announced that Xcode 26 supports third-party AI models via API keys. This means developers aren’t limited to ChatGPT—they can plug in AI tools from other providers and tailor the coding assistant to their specific workflows.

According to Apple, “Developers can connect [AI] models directly into their coding experience to write code, tests, and documentation; iterate on a design; fix errors; and more.”

Smarter Coding with Previews and Suggestions

Beyond just chat-based help, Xcode 26 includes tools for AI-generated previews of code and other intelligent development features, helping streamline repetitive tasks and speed up development cycles.

Part of a Bigger AI Push

Xcode’s AI upgrades are part of Apple’s broader push into developer-friendly AI tools. Also announced at WWDC was the Foundation Models framework, which lets developers integrate Apple’s on-device AI models with just three lines of code. This privacy-first, cloud-free approach enables developers to build smart, responsive apps while keeping user data local.

Available Now

Xcode 26 is available starting today for developers through the Apple Developer Program. The update positions Apple as a serious contender in the AI development space by combining its strengths in privacy, performance, and developer tools.
