Facebook Dating is getting an AI assistant

Meta is giving its dating platform a technological boost. On Monday, the company announced that it’s introducing an AI assistant for Facebook Dating, designed to help users discover matches more tailored to their preferences.
The chatbot can refine searches and profiles in real time. For example, users might ask it to find “a Brooklyn girl in tech” or request suggestions to make their profiles more appealing. Meta says the tool is aimed at cutting through the noise and creating more meaningful connections.

Tackling Swipe Fatigue
Alongside the assistant, Meta is rolling out a feature called Meet Cute, which provides users with a weekly “surprise match.” Rather than endless swiping, the algorithm selects a candidate it thinks has strong potential, hoping to reduce the fatigue that plagues many online daters.
The company reported that Facebook Dating matches among adults ages 18 to 29 have grown 10% year-over-year, with hundreds of thousands of new profiles from that demographic each month. Still, the platform remains modest compared to industry leaders: Tinder boasts about 50 million daily active users, while Hinge reports around 10 million.

AI Becomes Standard in Dating Apps
Meta’s move comes as AI becomes a default feature across dating platforms. Match Group, the parent company of Tinder, Hinge, and OKCupid, invested more than $20 million in AI through a partnership with OpenAI. Despite financial struggles that have seen its stock drop 68% over the past five years, the company is betting heavily on AI to revitalize growth.
So far, that investment has yielded tools like Tinder’s AI photo selector, which scans users’ camera rolls for the most effective profile pictures, and Hinge’s AI-driven suggestions for improving answers to profile prompts.
Bumble has also leaned into AI. Founder Whitney Wolfe Herd stirred debate last year when she floated the idea of users having AI concierges that could “go on dates” with other people’s AI to test compatibility before humans meet in person.
Meta’s Challenge
Meta is clearly hoping that Facebook Dating’s AI assistant and Meet Cute feature will help it stand out in a crowded market. With younger users flocking to platforms like Hinge and Tinder, Facebook Dating has struggled to gain the same cultural traction.
But if AI truly delivers on its promise — saving time, curating better matches, and reducing the drudgery of swiping — Facebook Dating might have found a way to make itself relevant in the age of algorithm-driven love.
