GE Vernova acquires Alteia to boost grid efficiency with AI

GE Vernova, a leading provider of power generation equipment, announced plans to acquire French software company Alteia in a move aimed at leveraging artificial intelligence to modernize and fortify the electric grid. The deal is part of a broader strategy to help utilities optimize infrastructure, reduce costs, and improve resilience amid growing electricity demand.
Alteia specializes in AI-powered software that processes visual data such as photographs to support critical inspection tasks. By using Alteia’s tools, utilities can assess storm or wildfire damage, pinpoint areas where vegetation needs trimming, and inspect infrastructure more efficiently and at lower cost. The acquisition is designed to enhance GE Vernova’s electrification software offerings and support utilities in minimizing service disruptions and accelerating power restoration.
“This acquisition allows us to address some of the most critical pain points for utilities,” said Scott Reese, head of GE Vernova’s electrification software business. “It’s about enabling faster, more informed decision-making in the face of increasing pressure on the grid.”
The acquisition, expected to close on August 1, underscores GE Vernova’s commitment to digital innovation at a time when the U.S. electric grid is under growing strain. A surge in demand for electricity—driven by data centers, electrification of transport, and industrial growth—has intensified focus on grid infrastructure and created strong tailwinds for companies servicing the sector.
Based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, GE Vernova has enjoyed a meteoric rise since its 2024 spin-off from General Electric Co., with its market value soaring to around $156 billion. The company’s shares have more than quadrupled in the past year, reflecting investor confidence in its strategy and the strength of the broader power market.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
