Google is stepping into Pinterest’s territory with the launch of Mixboard, an AI-powered tool that helps users create digital mood boards. Announced Wednesday, Mixboard allows anyone to generate inspiration boards using text prompts, pre-populated templates, or AI-assisted image editing—no existing image collection required.

AI at the Core

Unlike Pinterest’s collage feature, which relies on saved Pins, Mixboard taps directly into Google’s AI models. Users can describe what they want to visualize—like “boho living room decor” or “wedding color scheme ideas”—and the AI fills in the board with curated images.

The service also integrates Nano Banana, Google’s recently introduced image-editing model praised for producing realistic visuals and handling complex edits. Users can tweak AI-generated images, merge different visuals, or regenerate new options. Mixboard even generates descriptive text to accompany the images, helping users flesh out ideas for home design, event themes, DIY projects, and more.

Early Access Through Google Labs

Currently available in public beta in the U.S. via Google Labs, Mixboard is aimed at younger, creativity-driven audiences who already enjoy digital mood boarding. A Discord community has also been launched to encourage feedback and collaboration.

Competing With Pinterest and Startups

The move puts Google in direct competition with Pinterest, which has leaned into collage-making tools, most notably with its viral Shuffles app. While Shuffles was folded back into Pinterest, it revealed strong demand among Gen Z users for creative, shareable boards—often turned into TikTok content.

Other startups have experimented in this space as well, including AI-powered apps like Verse and Landing, though not all survived. Even Depop recently added a collage feature for styling and selling fashion collections.

Riding Gemini’s Momentum

Mixboard also arrives on the heels of strong demand for Google’s Gemini AI products, which recently displaced ChatGPT at the top of the U.S. App Store. By embedding Nano Banana into Mixboard, Google is leveraging its most popular AI tools in consumer-facing products.

With Mixboard, Google is betting that AI-driven creativity will appeal to a broad audience—from interior designers to hobbyists looking for visual inspiration. Whether it can chip away at Pinterest’s dominance remains to be seen, but the integration of text-to-image AI could give it an innovative edge.
