At its Google Home event on Wednesday, Google unveiled a refreshed lineup of Nest smart home devices designed to bring more intelligence and sharper visuals to home security. The new devices — including the $149.99 Nest Cam Outdoor (2nd gen.), $99.99 Nest Cam Indoor (3rd gen.), and the $179.99 Nest Doorbell (2nd gen.) — all feature 2K HDR video, the highest resolution Google has shipped yet, and tighter integration with its Gemini AI assistant.

Sharper, Smarter Hardware

Google says the 2K HDR sensor balances fidelity with efficiency, ensuring users can zoom in for details like license plates without excessive data consumption.

Other upgrades include:

  • Wider field of view: The new cams feature a 152-degree diagonal view, while the doorbell expands to 166 degrees with a 1:1 aspect ratio, showing a full-body view of visitors plus packages on the ground.
  • Improved low-light vision: A new sensor and wider aperture boost light sensitivity by 120%, keeping footage in full color longer at dawn and dusk, with infrared kicking in at night.
  • Smarter alerts: Zoomed-in previews now highlight what triggered an event, and users can permanently crop their doorbell’s view to focus on key areas.

The devices come in new colors, use plastic-free packaging, and are built with weatherproof, UV-protected materials.

Gemini Smarts Come to Nest

Where Google aims to leapfrog competitors is in AI-driven intelligence. With Gemini integration, Nest devices can move beyond basic object detection to “semantic scene understanding.”

Instead of vague alerts like “motion detected,” Gemini can generate richer context — for example, “FedEx driver delivered a package and left” or “dog jumps out of playpen.”

Other Gemini-powered features include:

  • Home Brief: A personalized 24-hour summary of activity, customizable by topic (e.g., kids, pets, deliveries).
  • Natural language automations: Users can ask Gemini to “make my home safer,” and it can suggest routines like closing blinds, locking doors, or simulating presence with lights.
  • Easier notifications: Smarter alerts reduce noise and highlight what matters most.

Subscription Shifts: Nest Aware Becomes Google Home Premium

Google also announced a rebrand of its Nest Aware subscription to Google Home Premium. Pricing remains the same:

  • Standard: $10/month
  • Advanced: $20/month

Home Premium is now bundled into Google One AI plans, with Pro subscribers ($20/mo.) getting Standard free, and Ultra subscribers ($250/mo.) getting Advanced included.

Meanwhile, all Nest functions are migrating into the Google Home app, phasing out the need for the separate Nest app.

Expanding Reach and Affordability

To broaden its market, Google is partnering with Walmart to launch budget-friendly devices under the onn. brand:

  • onn. Indoor Camera Wired ($22.96)
  • onn. Video Doorbell Wired ($49.86)

These offer 1080p resolution, with premium Gemini features available via subscription.

Availability

  • Nest Cam Indoor: Snow, Hazel, Berry — U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia, Japan.
  • Nest Cam Outdoor: Snow, Hazel — IP56-rated for dust and rain.
  • Nest Doorbell: Snow, Hazel, Linen — U.S. and Canada only.

All new devices are available via major retailers and the Google Store.

The Bigger Picture

By combining sharper hardware with Gemini’s multimodal AI, Google is positioning Nest as more than just a home security system. It’s a context-aware, assistant-driven home platform, capable of interpreting activity, automating routines, and making security feel smarter — not just more connected.
