Hertz now sells used cars on Amazon Autos

Hertz has announced a new partnership with Amazon that will allow customers to shop its used rental vehicles directly through Amazon Autos, the e-commerce giant’s growing car sales platform. The move marks the first time a rental car company has teamed up with Amazon to sell pre-owned vehicles online.
According to Hertz, the program has launched in Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and Seattle, with more cities expected to follow soon. Customers within 75 miles of these initial markets will be able to browse Hertz’s inventory on Amazon Autos and, if they make a purchase, pick up the vehicle at a Hertz Car Sales location within three days.
“Now you can conveniently shop our maintained-from-day-one vehicles on the online marketplace of – well – just about everything else,” the company says on its website.
Expanding Amazon’s Auto Marketplace
Amazon introduced its Autos business in December 2023, initially focused on selling new and certified pre-owned Hyundai vehicles through dealership partnerships in select states. While Amazon had previously offered car research tools and showroom browsing, the Hyundai deal marked the first time vehicles could actually be purchased on the platform.
Hertz’s entry significantly broadens Amazon Autos’ catalog, bringing a wide range of brands from its rental fleet, including Ford, Toyota, Chevrolet, and Nissan. CNBC reports that Hertz plans to expand its Amazon Autos presence to 45 locations across the U.S., aligning with the larger footprint of the marketplace.
What It Means for Buyers
For Amazon customers, the move provides another convenient way to buy used cars online, leveraging Hertz’s large and regularly refreshed fleet. Rental vehicles often come with detailed maintenance records, since they are serviced on a strict schedule, though buyers may weigh that against the higher mileage typically associated with rentals.
With this partnership, Amazon strengthens its push into automotive retail, while Hertz gains access to millions of Amazon shoppers — a potentially powerful channel as the company continues to reshape its business following its high-profile bankruptcy and fleet restructuring in recent years.
