Microsoft adds GPT-5 to Copilot with smart mode

OpenAI’s GPT-5 officially launched today, and Microsoft is rolling it out across its major AI-powered products, marking one of the largest simultaneous integrations of the model to date. The next-generation AI will now power Copilot, Microsoft 365 Copilot, GitHub Copilot, Azure AI Foundry, and more.
The move brings GPT-5 into Copilot’s new “smart mode”, which allows the assistant to automatically switch between models — opting for deeper reasoning when a task demands it or delivering faster responses when speed is the priority. Just like OpenAI’s decision to make GPT-5 available to all free ChatGPT users, Copilot will also provide free access to the new model.
Smarter, More Context-Aware Microsoft 365
Starting today, Microsoft 365 Copilot users will be able to tap into GPT-5’s enhanced capabilities. According to Microsoft, GPT-5 improves the AI’s ability to reason through complex questions, maintain focus during long conversations, and better understand user context. Copilot Studio — Microsoft’s tool for customizing and building AI-powered workflows — is also getting GPT-5 support, expanding its potential for enterprise solutions.
Better Coding with GitHub Copilot
GitHub is bringing GPT-5 to all paid GitHub Copilot plans. Developers can now take advantage of significant improvements in code generation and reasoning, thanks to GPT-5’s design focus on logic and multi-step problem-solving. OpenAI is offering GPT-5 in four different versions, including GPT-5-chat, which is fine-tuned for enterprise-grade multimodal and context-aware interactions.
Powering AI Development Through Azure
Microsoft is also integrating GPT-5 into Azure AI Foundry, giving developers direct access to the model for building AI-powered applications. Azure’s model router will help automatically select the most appropriate model — GPT-5 or otherwise — for each task, ensuring optimized performance for different workloads.
A Unified Push for AI Advancement
This simultaneous release underscores Microsoft’s deep integration with OpenAI’s technology and its commitment to making GPT-5 widely accessible across productivity, development, and enterprise platforms. With smarter context handling, stronger reasoning, and more refined code generation, GPT-5 is set to raise the capabilities of AI assistants across Microsoft’s ecosystem.
In short — whether you’re writing documents in Microsoft 365, debugging code in GitHub, or deploying AI applications in Azure, GPT-5 is now part of the toolkit.
