Threads tops 400 million monthly active users

Just two years after its debut as a rival to Twitter, Meta’s Threads has surpassed 400 million monthly active users (MAUs), Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced Tuesday.
“As of a few weeks ago we there are more than 400 million people active on Threads every month,” Mosseri wrote in a Threads post. “It’s been quite the ride over the last two years. This started as a zany idea to compete with Twitter, and has evolved into a meaningful platform that fosters the open exchange of perspectives. I’m grateful to all of you for making this place what it is today. There’s so much work to do from our side, more to come.”
The milestone marks an addition of 50 million MAUs in the past quarter, up from the 350 million figure Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed in late April.
While Threads still trails X in overall user base—X has more than 600 million MAUs, according to prior statements by former CEO Linda Yaccarino—the gap in daily mobile engagement is shrinking.
Data from market intelligence firm Similarweb shows that in June 2025, Threads’ iOS and Android apps logged 115.1 million daily active users, a year-over-year jump of 127.8%. X, meanwhile, recorded 132 million daily active users on mobile, but that number represents a 15.2% decline from the previous year.
However, X still dominates in web traffic. In June, X had 145.8 million average daily web visits worldwide, compared to just 6.9 million for Threads.
Threads’ rapid growth has been fueled by a steady rollout of new features over the past year, including direct messaging, fediverse integrations, custom feeds, AI-powered enhancements, and other user-requested updates.
With growth accelerating and competition with X intensifying, Mosseri signaled more updates are on the horizon, saying, “There’s so much work to do from our side, more to come.”
