Vimeo will be acquired by Bending Spoons for $1.38 billion

Video platform Vimeo announced Wednesday that it has agreed to be acquired by Bending Spoons, one of Europe’s largest mobile app developers, in an all-cash deal valued at approximately $1.38 billion.
The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2025, pending regulatory approval and customary closing conditions. Once complete, Vimeo will be delisted from public exchanges, ending its four-year run as an independent, publicly traded company.
Strategic Move by Bending Spoons
Bending Spoons, known for its aggressive acquisition strategy, has eyed Vimeo since at least March 2024. In a press release, CEO and co-founder Luca Ferrari emphasized that the company intends to invest heavily in Vimeo’s creator and enterprise offerings.
“At Bending Spoons, we acquire companies with the expectation of owning and operating them indefinitely,” Ferrari said. “We’ll make ambitious investments in the U.S. and other priority markets, while focusing on advanced features, performance, and responsible AI-enabled tools.”
Concerns About Bending Spoons’ Track Record
While Bending Spoons has grown into a major player in mobile apps, its acquisitions often come with significant restructuring. The company acquired Evernote in 2022, later laying off most of its U.S. and Chilean workforce, shutting down Linux and legacy apps, and heavily restricting its free tier.
Similarly, after acquiring WeTransfer in 2024, Bending Spoons cut 75% of its staff and soon imposed limits on free file transfers. These moves raise questions about how Vimeo’s services may evolve under its new owner.
Vimeo’s Journey and Struggles
Founded in 2004, Vimeo carved out a niche as a video platform for creators and businesses, competing against YouTube with a focus on quality, branding, and enterprise tools. The company spun out of InterActiveCorp (IAC) in 2021 but has struggled since, losing nearly 90% of its market value.
CEO Philip Moyer framed the acquisition as an opportunity for revitalization.
“We are excited about this partnership, which we believe will unlock even greater focus for our team and customers,” Moyer said. “Together with Bending Spoons, we aim to remain the most innovative and trusted video platform for businesses worldwide.”
What’s Next
Under Bending Spoons, Vimeo is expected to focus on its three core business segments: Self-Serve, OTT/Vimeo Streaming, and Vimeo Enterprise. Whether the new ownership will prioritize aggressive cost-cutting, like with Evernote and WeTransfer, or invest in long-term innovation remains to be seen.
For creators and enterprise clients alike, the coming year will be pivotal in shaping Vimeo’s future as part of Bending Spoons’ growing portfolio of digital tools.
